Lincoln's third son Willie passed away from Typhoid Fever in 1862. He was only 11 years old. The Lincolns were so grief stricken that they turned to mediums.Several seances were held in an attempt to contact his spirit. Mediums were said to visit Lincoln on a regular basis. It's rumored that one certain medium gave him advice from various great leaders in History. During one such visit, the spirit of Daniel Webster is said to have pleaded with Lincoln to continue his efforts to free the slaves. After his assassination, Mary Todd held a seance and believed to be successful in contacting his spirit.
The Mystical Leader
Abraham Lincoln generated a great deal of psychic energy. In November 1860, he told his wife that he would be elected to a second term and die while still in office. Reportedly, three days before his death he had dreams of his own assassination. He still went to the theater.
The entire second floor of the White House is the private residence of the first family. Lincoln's ghost is said to walk up and down the hallway knocking on doors. He has been seen many times in the Oval Office and the East Room where his body lay in state. Lincoln was attached to his post and took the responsibility of being President very seriously. During times of national emergency, there seems to be a great increase in his activity.
Sightings
The White House is listed as one of the top ten most haunted houses in America. Lincoln's spirit has been seen during every administration since his death. The first person to actually report seeing his spirit was Calvin Coolidge's wife Grace. She entered the oval office one day and saw Lincoln standing at the window looking out over the Potomac River. Seemingly over nothing, President Franklin Roosevelt's dog Fala would bark while in certain areas of the White House.
During an official visit, Queen Wilhemina of the Netherlands fainted one evening. She heard a knock on her door and opened it, only to see Abraham Lincoln standing there. Winston Churchill stayed at the White House once and refused to ever sleep there again. Amusingly, he was reportedly taking a bath and smoking his cigar. After his bath he walked into the bedroom naked. Standing at the fireplace was the ghost of Lincoln. Churchill was so startled and embarrassed that he left that evening. Ladybird Johnson was watching a television program one evening on the assassination of Lincoln. She felt uneasy and turned her head to see Lincoln in the room with her.
If anyone has doubts to whether or not the White is haunted, Harry Truman wrote this passage in a letter to his wife. "I sit there in this old house, all the while listening to the ghosts walk up and down the hallway. At 4 o'clock I was awakened by three distinct knocks on my bedroom door. No one was there. Damned place is haunted, sure as shootin'!"
